LOIR Adrien Charles [Lyon, 1862 - Paris, 1941], French bacte - Lot 95
LOIR Adrien Charles [Lyon, 1862 - Paris, 1941], French bacteriologist. Nephew of Pasteur by marriage and his assistant during the crucial years of the career of the founder of microbiology; assistant to Louis Thuillier.
Signed autograph letter dated Australia, addressed to Achille Maucuer. Sydney, 30 October 1891; 4 pages in-8°, stamped envelope enclosed.
In 1888, he travels to Australia to research anthrax and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. While there, he studied the use of the chicken cholera virus in an attempt to eliminate the rabbits that swarmed the continent.
"I've been in Australia for almost 18 months, I've been vaccinating against anthrax, I've been growing the peripneumonia virus in calves, I've been inoculating kangaroos with anthrax, I've been finding tuberculosis in pigs, and if I don't get red mullet, it's always a problem. I have been appointed by the government to be Sarah Bernhardt's dog keeper during her stay in Australia, I speak French regularly once a month, it's a very good exercise not to forget this beautiful language, finally I spend my time as pleasantly as possible, but there are still days when I would like to be in Bollène! Only you have to understand that I cannot at least at this moment, answer your kind invitation. I do not know completely where the red mullet vaccine is, if you still need any information, write to Mr. Perdrix at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, but I suppose that already, astonished not to receive an answer from me, you are in communication with my uncle "...
