[HAY DU CHASTELET, P.] - Lot 91
[HAY DU CHASTELET, P.] Treaty of the politics of France. Cologne (At the Sphere), P. du Marteau, 1669. Pet. in-12, 264 pp., fawn stockings gran. of lep., ornate nerve back, pet. carn. snags, lower headdress flattened. SHF 2969. INED (Original Edition) 1073. LEBLANC (ed. of 1677), p. 6. Year of the original edition. This work was worth to its author fifteen days of imprisonment in the Bastille although it was dedicated to Louis XIV. Hay du Chastelet is considered to be a precursor of Vauban and the Abbot of Saint-Pierre. He noted that extreme poverty leads to death and disease, thus contributing to rural depopulation, and called for tax reform to improve economic conditions. Opposed to the association of rural and urban workers, fearing that these conditions would contribute to making the former insolent and corrupt, he nevertheless maintained, against Colbert, that the happiness of man is the end of politics. During the planned expulsion of the Huguenots, he condemned this measure as anti-Christian. (SPENGLER p. 25)
