ZOLA Émile [Paris, 1840 - id., 1902], écrivain français
Signed autograph letter, [addressed to E. Pelletan].
Paris, January 9, 1869; 2 pages in-8°.
"I hear that the Tribune is going to undergo a transformation, and I'm afraid there's no room for me in the modified newspaper. I would have liked to go and talk to you about my position, but I am afraid I will disturb you and I prefer to tell you in writing how much I am counting on your sympathy to keep me as a faithful collaborator. ...] For seven months I have had the great honour of writing beside you, and I would grieve too much if I were no longer a member of the Tribune, to which I have devoted my heart and mind to this day. If it becomes impossible to insert long talks, I will be able to give shorter articles on literary and social issues related to politics. I know you're looking for a polemic sheet mostly. I'm in a belligerent mood, and I'll gladly take the shot. ...] I'm happy to be at your disposal, whatever work you want to entrust me with. [...]
When The Tribune was founded, you were already extremely kind enough to take me under your protection.
And that's why I hope in you. I am in great need of work, I live with my pen, and the Tribune is the only one that supports me at the moment. I await, I confess, the committee's decision with great anxiety."
