The author has divided these narratives into five centuries: popes and ecclesiastics (1), dukes, princes, soldiers (2), lawyers, doctors, philosophers (3), husbands and wives, villagers (4), a mixture of pleasant merriment (5). His aim is to edify as well as entertain his audience. His anecdotes are characterized by extraordinary or bizarre jokes that arouse astonishment or admiration. Aimed at a popular audience, the work, like the Tombeau de la Mélancolie and the Facétieux Réveil-Matin, was widely distributed (at least six editions of Part 1 between 1600 and 1662, including a translation).
