FOLENGO, Théophile - Histoire maccaronique de Merlin Coccaie, prototype de Rabelais. Paris, Toussaincts du Bray, 1606 (1734). 2 vols. pet. in-12, VIII, 370 pp. ; (1) f., 419 pp. in ivory vellum with flaps, smooth spine with calligraphic ornament and title, gilt tr. BRUNET II, 1319. These burlesque poems, composed in Latin, first appeared in 1517. Edition based on that of 1606, the first French edition. Vers Macaroniques are rhymes filled with Latin words, Italian words and words composed of these two languages, and they are called macaronic because they resemble macaroons, which are composed of flour, cheese and butter. It is said that Rabelais wanted to imitate this work in part, and that he inserted the best parts of it in his Pantagruel.
