DU VERDIER, Gilbert Saulnier, sieur - Les Esclaves ou l'Hist - Lot 396
DU VERDIER, Gilbert Saulnier, sieur - Les Esclaves ou l'Histoire de Perse. Paris, Thomas Le Roy, 1628. In-8, (4) ff, 634 pp, paper a little yellowed, some angular spotting, contemporary limp vellum, traces of string.
LEVER 154. First edition dedicated to Henri de Lorraine, comte d'Harcourt. Little is known of Du Verdier. He was historiographer of France, and his numerous works led him to the hospital: around 1676, he obtained for himself and his wife an asylum at the Salpêtrière, where he died in 1686. This champion of chivalry is best known for Chevalier Hypocondriaque, 1632, inspired by Don Quixote. He is the last representative of a genre soon to fall into disuse, but his work has the advantage of listing all the clichés of the chivalric novel (Lever, p. 40).
