RENOUARD 128.8. ADAMS H-403. The three folding plates depict the fortress of Semiramis, the gardens and the Tower of Babylon. Some editions have a fourth plate showing a general view of the city. Estienne's first edition of the translation by Lorenzo Valla (1405-1457). Also includes a Latin translation of the Life of Homer by the German humanist Konrad Heresbach (1496-1576), as well as a draft of the Apologie pour Hérodote published in French the same year in a much more extensive version, aimed at defending Herodotus from the accusations of falsehood long levelled against the historian.
