First edition. Framed title, numerous figs, one signed Pierre Cruche (Eskrich). Claude Guichard (1545-1607) also left two poetic works. He was secretary of state, maître des requêtes, then grand référendaire and historiographer of Savoy. He studied history and philosophy at Turin University, where he struck up a close friendship with another poet of the period, Antoine Favre. The dedication to Charles Emmanuel, Duke of Savoy, is printed in civil type. His descriptions of the funerary customs of all nations, including a section on those of North America, make it one of the first surveys of comparative ethnology. The copy belonged to the "Bibliotheca Colbertina" founded by the minister under the direction of Etienne Baluze. It was dispersed in 1728. Ex-libris Nicolas Quesnel dated 1598 (crossed out).
