Charles SERMENSAN, Bordeaux, 1687 Silver chocolatière, of piriform form, engraved with a coat of arms of alliance quartered with lions rampant and lances of tournois in fretty, stamped with a count's crown, the slightly curved spout with lily-shaped openwork filter, the thumb rest in volute, the grip joined by a widely cut acanthus leaf clamp, it rests on three clawed amati feet holding balls. Weight : 554 g. H: 18.2 cm. (feet replaced, pivot replaced, handle missing, minor knocks) In the XVIIᵉ century, chocolate remained an exotic curiosity. Introduced to France from Spain around 1615, on the occasion of the marriage of Anne of Austria to Louis XIII, it long remained confined to the royal courts and grand aristocratic hotels. Attributed with medicinal, fortifying and aphrodisiac virtues, it is often prescribed by doctors or enjoyed in private practices.
