Jean-Marie LE RICHE - Lot 33
Jean-Marie LE RICHE (active circa 1820-1830) View of Lake Agnano, near Naples Pen and gray ink, gray wash 13.5 × 25.5 cm Our drawing is preparatory to the aquatint engraved by Friedrich Salathé, published in Vues des monuments antiques de Naples, gravées à l'aqua-tinta, accompagnées de notices et de dissertations par M. J. Le Riche (Paris, 1827). Jean-Marie Le Riche, a French architect and draughtsman, spent time in Italy, where he produced a series of views of the Naples area, at the crossroads of archaeological observation and romantic picturesque. Lake Agnano, the ancient volcanic crater of the Phlegrean Fields, offered Grand Tour artists an emblematic motif of the Neapolitan landscape, imbued with mystery and natural science.
