Summer of Love, France, circa 1840 - Lot 57
Summer of Love, France, circa 1840 Folded fan, the paper leaf lined with skin and painted with gouache of the union of Zephyr and Flora, surrounded by lovers. The seasons are symbolized by the flowers of Spring, the fruits of Autumn and the fire for Winter on the right. The reverse shows an isolated monastery on an island in the mountains. Perhaps an evocation of the life of Saint Anthony? Mounted in carved, engraved and gilded bone, it features a basket of flowers and horns of plenty. The plumes are enriched with mother-of-pearl plaques. Gilded metal clasp. H.t. 27 cm-H.f. 16.2 cm (wear)
