History of the Casino La Pergola in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, built in 1927 by Robert Mallet-Stevens:
This hotel-casino complex comprises 3 sites: the Atlantic hotel, the Plage and the Pergola.
"At the end of the First World War, a project for the construction of a bathing establishment, including a hotel-casino, was entrusted to William Marcel. In early 1927, the project was reduced in size, retaining only the casino, hotel and boutiques; Robert Mallet-Stevens ultimately piloted the operation, and the casino opened in 1928.""The hotel-casino became, according to William Marcel's plans, an architectural complex comprising commercial premises, a covered gallery and garages."
"In the 1950s, architect Pavlovsky was commissioned to modify the building by raising it to accommodate apartments. He also turned the garden into an additional tourist attraction, transforming it into a mini-golf course. However, a hotel complex built in the 1980s permanently eliminated this green space." "Influenced by the cubist movement, straight lines, light and reinforced concrete are favored. The "La Pergola" complex opened its doors in 1928."
"The new complex comprising a hotel, casino, cinema and shopping arcade was built in a record year."
These photos predate the redesign of the garden (visible) into a mini-golf course. However, the Mallet-Stevens fountain has been preserved after this work.
"In today's photos, it's hard to find the aesthetic intended by Mallet-Stevens, with the massive construction totally disfiguring the project."
