Atlas of plates, large in folio without binding, comprising 47 large views and 3 plans.
Without text volume, title, frontispiece or pl.1 Vue de l'Ile de Tenedos, which are missing.
Etching and burin, very fine double-page engraved proofs after Melling by Bertaux, Dessaulx, Desmaisons, Duparc, Dequevauviller, le Rouge, Née, Pillement, Schroeder... some before the numbers.
Scattered foxing, stains, wetness to several boards, oxidation and traces of mildew, wavy folds and a few pinched folds, a few tears and missing parts, small tears on slightly yellowed edges.

Beautiful set of spectacular, detailed views, both panoramic of Constantinople and the Bosphorus, and more intimate views of seraglio life. A.I. Melling was born in Karlsruhe and studied architecture and painting. At the age of just 19, he was able to travel to Constantinople, where he was introduced to the sister of Sultan Selim III by the Danish ambassador, and was appointed imperial architect in
imperial architect in 1795. It was here that he was able to immerse himself in the atmosphere of the various Ottoman palaces, studying the buildings at close quarters and enjoying the views of the Bosphorus. Returning to Paris in 1803, he set about publishing the Voyage
Pittoresque, begun in 1809 and published in thirteen installments over a period of 10 years.
