Jan-Baptist Weenix began his apprenticeship in the workshops of Abraham Bloemaert and Claes Cornelisz. Moeyaert. Known in Italy as Giovanni Baptista Weenix, he lived in Rome from 1642 to 1647 and received numerous commissions from Cardinal Pamphili, the future Innocent X. On his return in 1649, he forged links with artists from the Utrecht guild, such as Poelenburgh and Jan Both. A prolific and fast-paced artist, he is renowned not only for his game paintings, but also for his Italian-style landscapes, in which figures are often depicted in ruined settings, and for his imaginary harbor views.
