Louis HERSENT - Lot 43
Louis HERSENT (Paris 1777 - 1860) Louis XVI distributing relief to the poor during the harsh winter of 1788 On its original canvas. 39 x 50 cm Monogrammed lower center L.H. Provenance : Jean Casimir-Perier Collection, President of the Republic ; By descent to Germaine Sommier ; Gift or bequest to Septima d'Ursel ; By descent from the collection of Monsieur and Madame A., in their Hôtel particulier near the Champs-Élysées; By descent to the current owner. Related work : Replica of the 1817 painting in Versailles (see A.-M. de Brem, Louis Hersent, Peintre d'histoire et portraitiste, Paris, 1993, n°29, reproduced). This painting depicts a visit by King Louis XVI to a village to assist peasants in distress. Indeed, the winter of 1788 was one of the harshest in French history, with numerous snowy and frosty episodes. Subscriptions were opened to collect money and clothing, charity committees were organized, and the great lords and royalty distributed alms. Painted during the Restoration, it's easy to see the political ambition of this work, which works towards the rehabilitation of King Louis XVI by his brother Louis XVIII. The large version was commissioned by Louis XVIII in 1816 for the Galerie de Diane in the Tuileries Palace.
