Jacob Marrel moved to Frankfurt in 1624 and became a pupil of Georg Flegel. Attracted by still lifes, he moved to Utrecht in 1632 to study with Jan Davidszoon de Heem. In 1660, he returned to Utrecht and settled there with his pupil Abraham Mignon. He also became an art dealer. His most famous work is a 1639 catalog of tulips, illustrated with watercolors, a copy of which is kept at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Here, in soft light, Marrel depicts a bouquet of tulips, carnations, dahlias, roses, primroses and anemones, arranged in a Delft earthenware vase with blue Chinese decoration. The bouquet is set on an entablature, framed by a snail and a lucana, converging on it. The earthenware vase and general color palette indicate that the painting dates from his mature period, probably between 1650 and 1665.
