MATHIEU Georges [Boulogne-sur-Mer, 1921 -... - Lot 244 - Oger - Blanchet
MATHIEU Georges [Boulogne-sur-Mer, 1921 - Paris, 2012], French painter. 7 autograph letters, some signed "Georginou", to his friends Donnet. (one has the impression that he writes sometimes to a friend and sometimes to his wife). Undated. 16 pages in-4, including 5 sheets with the header of the artist In which he talks about his travels and exhibitions, in Latin America, Japan, Sweden, his relations with the Kootz gallery in New York, the critic Michel Tapié, etc. A long 9-page letter is written from Tokyo, in which Mathieu recounts how he painted several canvases live in front of spectators, photographers and journalists, one of which was 8 meters long: "A canvas of the greatest violence where I used unprecedented techniques, threw the paint by hand from 6 meters away, whipped the canvas with a towel dipped in red paint. And in a following letter: "I now paint for photographers the way wedding ceremonies are done in the U.S.A.: according to cinematographic imperatives and not those of the sacred". Another letter is written from Argentina, in 1959, shortly before exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and at the Bonino Gallery in Buenos Aires. Attached is a copy of Floralies 1980, the catalog of the anniversary sale of the 30 years of the ministry of Georges Blache, with a double mailing to Solange Auzias de Turenne, the first one from Mathieu, signed "Georginou" and illustrated with a drawing in black ballpoint pen, and the second one, in red marker, by the auctioneer, specifying that it is copy n°2. In-4, publisher's full black cloth binding illustrated by Mathieu.
