Iznik mug - Lot 222
Iznik mug Siliceous paste with polychrome decoration painted under transparent colorless glaze. Iznik, late 16th - early 17th century Dimensions : H. 24,5 cm This mug, decorated with mandorles with alternating flakes of floral bouquets, shows how the ceramist attempted to use color on the base, in the manner of pieces with a lavender or coral background, of which very few examples are known. It is likely that on this piece the ceramist wanted to try another color than the coral (such as the famous carnation cup in the Louvre, OA6325) or lavender background, but that the attempt was not successful. This piece is nevertheless a very interesting document of Ottoman ceramic production of the period. Visible wear and staining of the glaze.
