Kees van DONGEN (Rotterdam 1877 - Monte Carlo 1968) Portrait of Edmonde Guy Watercolor 82,5 x 47,5 cm Signed lower right van Dongen Bears on the back of the mount a stamp GR2A Provenance : Bought by Bernard Pujo at the Galerie Charpentier in 1960 ; Given by Madame Pujo to Jean G. on July 5, 1982. By descent to the present owner. Edmonde Guy (1903 - 1951) was a dancer, music hall artist and actress. She was the sister of the milliner Maria Guy. Kees van Dongen made several portraits of this famous artist in the 30s. Related works : - A portrait in black ink was sold on March 14, 2018 in Geneva (Hôtel des Ventes Piguet, #808, reproduced). - A portrait very similar except for the tones, was sold on November 17, 2016 in New York (Christies, no. 1035, reproduced) - The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice exhibited a portrait on canvas in 2005. A certificate of authenticity from Monsieur Jacques Chalom des Cordes will be given to the buyer.
