Leopold Fréderic Leopoldovitch Stürzwage, more commonly known as Leopold Survage, was a painter of Russian origin, born in 1879 and died at the age of 89. Attracted by French painting, he was introduced to modern art through the collections of Shchukin and Morozov. When Leopold Survage arrived in Paris in 1908, he was introduced by Guillaume Apollinaire to the circle of Baroness Hélène d'Oettinger, who received in her salon "those who have or will have a name in modern painting, poetry and music" where he met many artists including Picasso. many artists, including Picasso. In Paris, he became a student of Matisse and was influenced by Cézanne, then by Cubism, which he would later practice. From 1914 to 1922, Leopold Survage began his "Cities" series, a series of works that included two distinct phases, the first carried out on the French Riviera where he drew from the city of Nice a palette composed of pinks, blues of the sky and the sea, deep greens, strident yellows, bright oranges and reds. His second phase, which lasted from 1919 to 1922, was devoted to Montparnasse. During these eight years, Leopold Survage produced highly structured oil paintings by deconstructing space in two dimensions and inserting motifs representing buildings and leaves linked by colored geometric blocks.
