LA FONTAINE, Jean de - Tales with illustrations by Fragonard. Reprint of the Didot edition, 1795, revised and increased with a notice by M. Anatole de Montaiglon. Paris, J. Lemonnyer, 1883. 2 volumes in 4 vols. in-4, in volume I, pages 169 to 281 have been bound before pages 100 to 168, half-mar. bleu nuit à la bradel, cover and spine cons. One of the 100 ex. num. on Japon ''fait pour les amateurs'' (first edition). 91 plates hors texte, 34 of which after Fragonard reproducing those of the 1795 edition, and 57 plates engraved by Martial after drawings left by Fragonard. They were part of the collection of the Duc de Choiseul, then of Portalis and finally of Eugène Paillet and appear here for the first time. They are in double state, in black and in bistre. The editors have added for the first edition : A complete suite of 38 plates and 2 vignettes after Lancret, Pater, Eisen, Boucher engraved by Pollier in two states, pure etching, and before the letter on Japon - 20 prints drawn by Fragonard and Touzé for the ed. of Firmin Didot reduced and etched by T. de Mare in two states: pure etching on Japon and before the letter on Chine fort - a suite of 6 prints drawn and engraved by J. H. Ramberg in two or three states.
