. VAENIUS, Otho - Quinti Horatii Emblemata. Imaginibus in as - Lot 232
. VAENIUS, Otho - Quinti Horatii Emblemata. Imaginibus in as incisis notisque illustrata. Antverpiae (Antwerp), Philippum Lisaert, 1612. in-4, 214 pp. of which 103 figures, last leaf detached, some stains and soiling on the margins, brown calf of the ep., spine worn with lacks, corners dull. PRAZ 523. LANDWEHR n° 241. FUNCK 404. Second edition, the first appeared in 1607. The text is in five languages. Many Dutch editions are known. These figures were used, later, for the illustration of the ''Théâtre moral de la vie humaine représenté en plus de 100 tableaux, tirés d'Horace par Otho Vaenius, expliqués par le sieur de Gomberville avec la table du philosophe Cebes'', (Bruxelles, en 1672, chez Foppens). One of the most popular books of emblems. The figures are engraved by Corn. Boël, Corn. Galle and Pierre de Jode after Vaenius. This master of Rubens renews the illustration of the emblematic genre by composing full-page pictures that have their meaning and aesthetic value in themselves.
