SAMBUCUS, Johannes - Emblemata cum aliquot nummis antiqui op - Lot 221
SAMBUCUS, Johannes - Emblemata cum aliquot nummis antiqui operis. Antuerpiae (Antwerp), Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1564. In-8, 240 pp, washed ex. without binding. VOET 2168. PRAZ p. 486. LANDWEHR, Emblem Books in the Low Countries, no. 709. First edition of the first book of emblems printed by Plantin. Collection of moral or political themes with a portrait of the author and 167 woodcuts by Arnold Nicolai, Cornelis Muller and Gerard Janssen van Kempen after the drawings of Pieter d'Huys and the Ghent painter Lucas d'Heere, followed by 46 medals representing the effigies of Roman emperors. These emblems of high artistic quality are followed by Latin poems giving their explanation according to the tradition of Alciat. Sambucus sometimes dedicated them to eminent humanists he met during his travels in Europe, making a kind of album amicorum: Fulvius Ursinus, Hubert Goltzius, Paul Manuce, Hadrian Junius, etc.
