[LIGHTING]. [ITALY]. - Lot 188
[LIGHTING]. [ITALY]. Historiated initial U/V taken from a missal, liturgical psalter or choir book (?) Assembly of male saints. Italy, Florence, ca. 1500 (?) Attributable to Attavante degli Attavanti (active in Florence, b. 1452, d. c. 1525) Dimensions : 86 x 83 mm Initial U (or V), drawn in pale pink with white and darker pink highlights, surrounded by green and blue acanthus leaves; text on back: in Latin, truncated text: "[] flumina". Close-cut initial with truncated acanthus extensions; some rubbing to the faces of the saints with some loss of pictorial surface, but generally preserved modeling of the faces. This initial is attributable to a Florentine artist named Vante di Gabriello di Vante Attavanti, known as Attavante degli Attavanti. This artist worked for many aristocrats and prelates throughout Italy and even Europe, producing numerous works for Matthias Corvin first and then Lorenzo de' Medici and even Pope Leo X who commissioned him to paint several missals for the Sistine Chapel.
