HOGENBERG, Frans - (Geschichtblätter). (Cologne, Frans Hogenberg, last third of the 16th c.). Oblong folio, 71 plates engraved in intaglio, a few leaves chipped, lower corners chipped with some small tears, light spotting affecting a third of the work, soft vellum of the ep. a little stained. The Geschichtblätter include several hundred plates published between 1569 and 1637. After the death of Frans Hogenberg in 1590, the enterprise was continued by his son. The present collection contains: a complete suite of 34 plates on the Wars of Religion in France numbered 1 to 34 (June 10, 1559 - March 16, 1573). These plates were made after Tortorel and Perrissin (V. Brunet V, 895). Plates 33 and 34 (St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre and Defeat of the royal troops before La Rochelle) are missing in most copies - 21 plates on the Dutch War of Independence num. (1) and 1 to 20 (Dec. 8, 1576 - April 27, 1577) - 16 plates on the same subject num. 1 to 16 (May 1, 1577 - February 21, 1578). Legends in German in the plate, and in French on strips laminated in the lower margin. There are numerous scenes of battles, massacres and capital executions, often showing urban areas such as for Maestricht, Antwerp, Valenciennes, Berg-op-Zoom, Brussels, etc.
