ZOLA Émile [Paris, 1840 - id., 1902], French writer. - Lot 67
ZOLA Émile [Paris, 1840 - id., 1902], French writer. Autograph letter signed, to the director of the Sémaphore in Marseille. Paris, January 2, 1897; 3 pages in-8°. E. Zola was the correspondent of the Sémaphore from 1871 to 1877. He provides more than 1800 articles; he says that the newspaper feeds him and that the newspaper feeds him well. Remarkable letter on the Dreyfus Affair: "My old friend, I am overflowing with letters, visits, business, troubles of all kinds; and I am writing to you on the run, to be sure to do so. [It is you, isn't it? who will surely come to see us this year, when your worries at the "Semaphore" leave you time. Besides, since you are holding on so firmly, things are not going so badly; and I hope, in short, that you will keep this place, because it allows you to work: that is the big deal. Yes, Daudet is gone, and Coppée is not doing well. The bell tolls, we are all on our way to rest. But in the meantime, what a rush, with this Dreyfus affair! It is the most extraordinary adventure in the world, and one that fascinates me. I firmly believe in revision. But you would have to be there to understand.
