Agathon LÉONARD (Léonard Agathon Van Weydeveldt dit, 1841-1923) & MANUFACTURE NATIONALE DE SÈVRES (publisher) Dancer with tambourine. Element n°4 of the series of dancers of the table top "Jeu de l'écharpe". Proof in biscuit (small chip to the tambourine and to the left sleeve, tiny cracks and hair). Stamp of the factory, dated 1905, monogrammed AD for the modeller (probably Alphonse Dumain, active from 1884 to 1927). H. 49.5 cm History: In 1897, Agathon Léonard exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts a dozen terracotta high reliefs depicting dancers. Variations of these figures were commissioned by the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, which transposed them into biscuit porcelain to form a table centrepiece. The complete set was presented for the first time at the Universal Exhibition of 1900, where it was a great success, leading to several subsequent editions. The Musée d'Orsay keeps a model similar to ours under the inventory number OAO 1424.
