History:

In 1897, Agathon Léonard exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts a dozen terracotta high reliefs depicting dancers. Variations of these figures were commissioned by the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, which transposed them into biscuit porcelain to form a table centrepiece. The complete set was presented for the first time at the Universal Exhibition of 1900, where it was a great success, leading to several subsequent editions.

The Musée d'Orsay keeps a model similar to ours under the inventory number OAO 1424.
