Edgar DEGAS Virginie (Cardinal) admired while the Marquis Cavalcanti looks at her About 1880-1883. Monotype. 160 x 120 mm. [261 x 200 mm]. Janis 225 (1st proof) - Adhémar et Cachin nd. Second proof on laid paper, with the artist's stamp (recto - Lugt 658). General oxidation of the sheet and insolation at the opening of an old mount. Discoloration of the artist's stamp. Top corners torn off. Tear at right edge (17 mm). A few marginal soft creases. One horizontal broken fold. 2 tiny white spots on the surface (one towards the middle of the left edge of the subject, the other at the lower edge of the subject towards the right). A tiny pinhole in the subject. All margins. Provenance: Sale of prints by Edgar Degas and from his from his studio, Paris, Galerie Manzi-Joyant, 22 and 23 November 1918, probably included in lot no. 201: Les Petites Cardinal, by Ludovic Halévy. This lot included 78 pieces including 37 monotypes, 8 of which were enhanced with with pastel.
