GILLET Louis [Paris, 1876 - id., 1943], art historian and hi - Lot 11
GILLET Louis [Paris, 1876 - id., 1943], art historian and historian of French literature. Signed autograph letter, addressed to Albert Laprade. Montpellier, April 9, 1943; 3 pages 1/2 in-8°. "My son tells us that he has just embarked for Paris on March 23rd of the projects he has just executed for a "Concours des Places" instituted by the city. These are studies for future embellishments. There is no immediate risk of the project being carried out. I don't know where the exhibition of these projects is taking place, nor who is on the jury [...]. I think my son has done two projects. The one he is most interested in, and which he seems to be really happy with (both as a plan and as architecture) is the one concerning the entrance to the Porte St Denis. I imagine that he will have made a kind of Piazza del Popolo, but in the measure of Paris. ...] Nothing more petty than the Place de l'Opéra, more mediocre than that of the Théâtre Français, more inextricable than the Rond Point of St Thomas Aquinas. In short, since Gabriel and Mansart [...] there hasn't been a place in Paris on the scale of the modern movement. Guillaume flatters himself for having done something truly monumental. It's not for me to judge. ...] What would be the use of youth if not to aim high and show boldness? "»...
