WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU (la Rochelle 1825-1905)
The paper secret. 20 x 14 cm Louise d'Argencourt recognizes our sketch as an original work by Bouguereau, painted between 1873 and 1876. It is similar to several preparatory sketches made by Bouguereau for Le Secret (Toile, 1.30 x 0.85 cm) commissioned by Robert L. Stuart in 1873 and now kept at the New York Historical Society (see D. Bartoli, F.C. Ross, William Bouguereau, Catalogue raisonné of his painted work, New York, 2010, 1876/02). The Custodia Foundation keeps a letter from Bouguereau to Robert Stuart dated 28 October 1873, in which the artist indicates that he sends him six preparatory studies leaving the choice to the commissioner before he returns them to him. Stuart chooses the study closest to the current painting, asking for the addition of a child figure that appears on our study, giving the artist the desired time to paint the painting.
