Ludovico POZZOSERRATO (c.1550-c.1603)
The death of Adonis On his original canvas. 94 x 104 cm This painting represents the death of Adonis, accompanied by his hunting dogs. Venus on the left, horrified by the discovery of her lover's body, laments surrounded by love. Student in Antwerp of Martin de Vos, Ludovico Pozzoserrato, also known as Ludovic Toeput, decides on the advice of his master to go and study in Italy, first in Venice in the Tintoretto's studio, then in Rome and Florence before settling in Treviso where he creates frescoes and large decorations, making him one of the creators of the Mannerist landscape. Our composition is characteristic of Pozzoserrato's Italian work, where the setting is highlighted with the dense vegetation of the forest framing the scene and blending in with the architecture. The figures are also characteristic of the artist, with their massive, curved bodies, the figure of Adonis can be likened to that of the Good Samaritan in the fresco of The Biblical Story of Treviso.
