We are grateful to Mr. Stefano Lo Caso for pointing out that the drawing is based on the composition of a painting from the workshop of Giulio Romano depicting Nero playing as Rome burns, now in the Royal Collection of England at Hampton Court. The panel was originally part of the decoration of the Camerino dei Cesari in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
