Abraham BLOEMAERT (Gorinchem 1564 - Utrecht 1651) Study for a whistling boy and a bishop Black stone and white highlights on beige paper. 13 x 15,5 cm On the back, Study for two peasant women and a peasant carrying baskets, black stone and white highlights. Bears a signature Bloemaert / fec. We can compare these figures with paintings and engravings by Bloemaert. The study of the peasants on the reverse side can be found in the series of thirty small figures engraved and published by Nicolaes Visscher around 1620-1625 (see M.Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, Doornspijk, 1993, n°486-487, reproduced). The study of the bishop on the front may have been used by the artist when he painted The Four Fathers of the Church in 1632 (see M. Roethlisberger, opus cit. supra, reproduced, pl. XXIII) or in the series of the twelve bishops and prelates of Utrecht engraved and published by Bloemaert in 1626 (see M. Roethlisberger, opus cit. supra, nos. 603-608, reproduced).
