René MAGRITTE (1898-1967) Two illustration projects for the cover of the magazine "Au volant". Graphite and India ink on paper, monogrammed and dated 1919, one at the bottom right, the second at the top right of the composition. Marginal note on one of the graphite drawings in the lower right showing the profile of a male face. 19,8 x 13,8 cm 21.8 x 15.7 cm Provenance : Pierre BOURGOIS Gift of the previous owner to the present owner in 1969. A detailed certificate will be given to the purchaser. Pierre BOURGEOIS is the founder in 1919 with his brother Victor BOURGEOIS of the magazine "Au volant" for which René MAGRITTE collaborates to the four issues from April to September 1919 and provides according to the catalog raisonné of René MAGRITTE (D. Sylvester & S. Whitfield), six illustrations. MAGRITTE also designed the banner of the column "a la venvole" which appears in each issue of the magazine. In the last issue, an ex-libris designed for Pierre BOURGEOIS by his friend MAGRITTE is reproduced as a caricature. René MAGRITTE and Pierre BOURGEOIS met at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels at the end of 1918, beginning of 1919, and quickly developed a deep friendship. In 1919, Pierre BOURGEOIS organizes the first exhibition on René MAGRITTE, who is then only 21 years old. MAGRITTE painted three portraits of Pierre BOURGEOIS in 1919 and 1920. It would be him who would have awakened the attention of MAGRITTE for the futurism. Pierre BOURGEOIS is a poet and writer. His brother Victor is an architect. They are both major figures of the modernist current in architecture. In April 1919, they founded the magazine "Au volant : vers la plénitude par la dictature de la conscience" and included MAGRITTE in the editorial board. This magazine is a real tribune for the modern ideas for art and architecture. It knows an ephemeral existence with only four numbers. However, it is not without importance: In the last number, the BOURGEOIS brothers take the defense of Victor HORTA and his proposals of reform of the teaching of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels.
