Works of the Warsaw Society of Sciences and Letters, class III mathematical and physical sciences, no. 33. First edition of the doctoral thesis of Herbrand (1908-1931), author of a theorem "considered fundamental in the logic of predicates" (Larousse). His work was "rediscovered" by the Americans at the beginning of the 70's, within the framework of the research concerning computer science. The result of reflections inspired by his reading of Löwenheim, Skolem, von Neumann and Hilbert. Herbrand's goal is to introduce in his thesis "the new Hilbertian axiomatic logics" in France, and to make a place for algebra in a mathematical teaching entirely dominated by analysis" (V. Catherine Chevalley, Revue d'histoire des sciences, 1987, vol. 40, p. 73). Without the errata page.
