HUGO Victor [Besançon, 1802 - Paris, 1885],... - Lot 32 - Oger - Blanchet
HUGO Victor [Besançon, 1802 - Paris, 1885], French poet and writer. Important file: Autograph letter signed "Victor Hugo" [to Edmond Texier, du Siècle]. Hauteville House, March 25; 2 pages in-8° on blue paper. Very beautiful letter about his feelings in exile: "This morning while reading the Siècle where you speak of my book with so much elevation and in such a beautiful style, it seemed to me that I was reading a letter from you. This letter, sent to two addresses, written by you to the public with your spirit and to me with all your heart, I was reading it full of emotion. I was sitting on the point of a high sea ridge called Fermain-bay, I had before me this vast horizon of the wind where it seems by memory that one sees floating all his destiny. There were already flowers open in the lawn and birds in love in the hedge, an intermittence of sun and azure lighted gently my reading, I thought of my friends of France, of you, dear and noble spirit, of our meeting in Brussels, of the indefinite absence, to this solitude and to this silence where I am locked up. Was I sad? No. How can one be sad when one is loved. And at times I feel a little loved. A sympathy like yours, so eloquently and cordially expressed, stirs up what is proudest and sweetest in a solitary soul. I felt penetrated. The consciences, the probities, the valour, the values, I felt them represented by you near me. It seemed to me that your friendship spoke to my ear. Autograph piece signed "Victor Hugo" December 1, 1874; 1 page in-8° oblong. "I have received from MM.
