During the Apollo 9 mission, the astronauts performed all the maneuvers of a lunar mission, while remaining in Earth orbit. It was on this occasion that the modules were nicknamed Gumdrop and Spider for the Apollo spacecraft and the lem, respectively. These nicknames were intended to avoid any confusion between the two ships in their communication with Earth.
