Erro, the dominant figure of narrative figuration, the French counterpart of Pop Art, is known for his works mixing humour and political criticism in compositions that are unrealistic but very much in tune with current events. In NATO, the work we present, one can discover in the background the landscape of a small snowy and peaceful village. The aerial perspective is here in the style of the Renaissance, a habit at ERRO. This mountain view contrasts violently with the planes of the Free French who are about to bomb. This perspective landscape enters a second effect of contrast with the foreground, composed of two groups of characters treated in the manner of American Comics and represented in an absolutely flat, brilliant and graphic way. On the one hand, the group of men on the right presents a caricature of American geopolitics vis-à-vis its main NATO allies, where the character symbolizing the American ebbs his neighbors who could be recognized as Jacques Chirac and Harold Wilson, respectively Prime Minister of France and Great Britain in 1974. It is perhaps a reference to the Ottawa summit where the United States extended NATO control over French and British nuclear forces. In the pocket of this cumbersome reader is a dollar-dollar missile that echoes the liberating bombs of the Free French airplane.
