GOGUET, Antoine-Yves
On the Origin of Laws, Arts and Sciences, and their progress among ancient peoples. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, 1758. 3 vol. in-4, XXVIII, 401 pp.; VIII, 438 pp.; VIII, 368 pp., (2) ff. 9 folios, 9 folios, and 3 tables, russet, tawny calf marbled with the epistle, (2) ff, spine with decorated nerves, t.d. red and green mar. 9 folding plates depicting ancient Egyptian monuments, drawn and engraved by Pierre Patte and 3 folding pictures. One of the first attempts in the history of civilization where historical facts are used as part of an anthropological understanding. The notion of civilization is no longer deduced from an abstract philosophy. Goguet attaches paramount importance to the study of laws and political institutions, the framework of all social life, then examines the development of techniques starting with agriculture, the source of later progress, and studies for each period the scientific acquisitions. He tries to make up for the lack of sources for the earliest times by consulting testimonies on contemporary primitive peoples, especially the relations of America.
