Treasure of St. Sergius Lavra, 17th century Rare dish, bratina, from the 17th century, Moscow region, in plain silver, with a rim decorated with an engraved frieze of foliage motifs surrounding a Slavic inscription: "The friars of the monastery Trinity St. Sergius" in gilt. Diam. 12 cm - H. 7.5 cm. Weight 219 gr. Provenance: Former treasure of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, N°6/7 Acquired in the 1930s by a French diplomat, then by descent to the present owner Bibliography: The work is mentioned in the catalogue OLSOUVIEV, Descriptions of the silver tcharkas and bratinas of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, ????? ?????????? ? ???????? ? ?????????? ?????? ?. ??????- ??????????????Serguiev Possad, Ivanov, 1925, N°6/7 formerly N°118. Exhibition: A similar, slightly larger piece was recently exhibited at the Lavra Museum on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The bratina is a dish with a slightly spherical belly used to hold wine at banquets in ancient Moscow Russia. In the first half of the 17th century the famous monastery of the Trinity of St. Sergius ordered several bratinas from Moscow workshops, which are mentioned in an inventory dated 1641. In 1925, Count Yura Olsufiev, wishing to preserve the memory of ancient Russian art, made several bratinas?6, a complete catalogue of the treasures of Saint Sergius Lavra . In the 1930s, these precious pieces of gold and silverware were found in the Soviet offices responsible for selling the goods confiscated from the Church. It is during this period that the ancestor of the present owner is said to have acquired this major piece of Russian goldsmithing history.
