With no real equivalent in 17th century French painting, our painting depicts a hunter (the cartel mentions a Baron du Pille but we have not found any trace of this family for the moment) sitting quietly between his three dogs and the product of his hunt, all in a large autumn landscape with Provençal motifs. The hunter is seated which provokes an empathy between him and his dogs and a sympathy between the model and the viewer of the painting. The painting is fortunately signed with beautiful calligraphy and in an almost pompous style inventor parisys annimallia. It is the work of two painters who are both of Flemish origin. Jean Daret is the inventor. He was 47 years old at the time. Born in Brussels and a pupil of a certain van Opstal, he arrived in Paris in 1633 before leaving for Italy. He was in Aix-en-Provence, his city of election, in 1636 and until 1660 alternated large church paintings and hotel decorations in Aix (he returned from Italy with a taste for quadratura).
