Cesare DANDINI (Florence 1596-1657)
Saint John the Baptist Canvas. 73 x 59 cm Frameless. There is only one other known representation of Saint John the Baptist by Dandini, preserved in a Florentine collection (see S. Bellesi, Cesare Dandini, Turin, 1996, n°89, reproduced). Our Saint John the Baptist is dressed in a skin tunic and a red drape - symbols of the Passion and Death - and presents the cross and the Ecce Agnus Dei cartouche. It is representative of Florentine painting of the mid-seventeenth century, which emphasizes the sensual aspect of faces. The enigmatic expression and treatment of the face, in movement, can be related to many of Dandini's works, such as the Apollo preserved at the Casa di Risparmio, Prato, whose face is particularly close to ours (see S. Bellesi, Cesare Dandini, Turin, 1996, no. 88, reproduced).
